Stretching >between the Cap Ferrat peninsula and Mont Boron, the Bay of Villefranche offers an exceptional setting. Its depth can reach 60 meters in the middle and 1000 meters offshore. Like an abyss, it had great strategic interest. It is not surprising that it was once the mooring point for military vessels in times of war!
Located at the bottom of the large bay, on the west side, the Port of La Darse is >a vestige of the history of Villefranche-sur-Mer. Built in the middle of the 16th century on an area of over 6 hectares, this former military arsenal of the Duke of Savoy was listed as a historical monument in 1991. This site is a must-see for boaters and anyone wishing to discover one of the most beautiful maritime heritages of the town.
Built from 1554 by the Italian engineer Gian Maria Olgiatti on a promontory above the bay, the Citadel of Villefranche was formerly a military fortress before being classified as a historical monument. It now houses the Town Hall and a cultural center comprising museums, an auditorium, and an outdoor theater that attract many visitors each year (including one of the music festivals!). It's the ideal place to take a cultural dive, while enjoying an exceptional view of the bay.
