Swimming is unsupervised, but the gentle slope of the shore allows you to swim while standing far out, and the water is generally very clean. The Orpellières are also conducive to observing wildlife (seabirds, rollers, etc.) and coastal flora, thanks to educational trails on the dunes managed by the coastal conservatory. Valras-Plage being a human-sized resort, it's easy to get around and reach from nearby big cities. Here are the main means of transportation to come to Valras-Plage and get around once there:
Coming by car to Valras-Plage is often the most convenient choice, especially for families. The resort is well connected to the road network: from the A9 motorway (La Languedocienne), take the exit 36 Béziers-Ouest if you are coming from Montpellier/Narbonne or exit 35 Béziers-Est from the west, then follow the direction Valras-Plage for about fifteen kilometers. You can also arrive via the A75 motorway (Béziers exit then D64). The D37 departmental road connects Béziers to Valras in about 20 minutes. Once in Valras, several free parking lots are available for visitors: notably the large parking lot of La Jasse Neuve at the entrance of the city (served by a free shuttle in season), or the Mouettes parking lot near the casino. In summer, it's advisable to arrive early in the morning or late in the day to easily find a spot, as crowds are heavy in the middle of the day in parking lots near the beach. Traffic in Valras itself can be dense in high season, but most of the streets in the center are one-way, which smooths traffic. In summary, coming by car will allow you to easily explore the region (explore Béziers, Cap d'Agde, etc.) while having great flexibility for your schedule.
If you prefer public transport, no problem: the nearest train station is the Béziers TGV station, very well served (direct connections from Paris in 4 hours, from Lyon in 2h30, and frequent TER from Narbonne, Montpellier, Toulouse…). From Béziers, a regular bus line connects directly to the city center to Valras-Plage in summer. Line 16 (or 210210 according to the new liO numbering) departs from the Béziers bus station (next to the SNCF train station) and takes you to Valras in about 30 minutes for a modest fare (~1.60€). Buses run every day in high season, with a departure about every 30 minutes from 8 am to 7 pm. They drop you off either at the Valras – central lifeguard station stop (near the central beach) or at the Valras – Le Bosquet stop (east beach/Orpellières side). Be sure to check the exact schedules on the Hérault Transport website. Outside of summer, the line is less frequent, but Valras remains accessible via connections. Note that once in Valras, everything can be done on foot (the city is small), so coming by train+bus is entirely feasible without a car, for a 100% relaxation stay.
The Béziers Cap d'Agde airport is the closest to Valras (only 15 km away). It hosts regular seasonal flights from several European cities (London, Bristol, Manchester, Düsseldorf, Stockholm…) operated mainly by Ryanair, as well as some national connections. From the airport, you can rent a car on-site or take the airport shuttle line 210 to the center of Béziers, then the bus to Valras as indicated above. Other nearby airports are those of Montpellier (about 1 hour drive) and Carcassonne (~1h15), which offer more national/international flights. Once landed, the car or taxi remains the simplest way to reach Valras directly from these airports.
To get around in Valras-Plage itself, there's no need for a car: everything can be easily done on foot or by bicycle. The resort has a pleasant pedestrian promenade along the seafront to connect the port, central beach, and casino in a few minutes' walk. The traditional market (Monday and Friday mornings in summer) is held on Place Charles Thomas, accessible on foot from the beach. If you enjoy cycling, consider bringing or renting bikes: the city is fairly flat, and you can take the coastal bike path to reach Sérignan-Plage to the east or even go as far as Vendres-Plage to the west. In July-August, the town hall sets up a free electric shuttle that tours the resort: it connects the outlying parking lots (La Jasse Neuve parking) and the city center/Square Magrou, which is very convenient at peak times. This shuttle runs about every 20 minutes, especially in the evening to bring beachgoers back to their cars. Another original way to discover the city: the Valras-Plage tourist train, which offers 45-minute guided tours through the resort (seafront, port, typical neighborhoods…) for only 5€ per adult. It's fun and allows you to learn more about the local history while moving effortlessly. Finally, for longer trips, taxis are available in Valras (station in front of the Tourist Office), and VTC services can be reserved to reach Béziers or other sites.
